The Comital House of Waldburg-Zeil-Hohenems
The line Waldburg-Zeil-Hohenems was founded in 1779 when Count Clemens, a son of Count Franz Anton of Waldburg zu Zeil and Trauchburg, married Countess Maria Walpurga of Harrach-Rohrau-Hohenems. Hder mother Maria Rebecca was the daughter of the last reigning Count of Hohenems Franz Wilhelm III. who died in 1759. After his death his daughter Maria Rebecca took over Lustenau but the County and imperial fief Hohenems was taken over by Austria. On 06.12.1766, Lustenau was also taken over by Austria. After the trials against Austria by Maria Rebekka, on 9 September 1784, Count Clemens von Waldburg-Zeil-Lustenau-Hohenems resumed the litigation, after he had married Maria Rebecca’s daughter Maria Walpurga in 1779. After twenty years of litigation, on 24.01.1786, Austria recognized the sovereign rights of the Countess Maria Rebekka over Lustenau. These rights were confirmed and ratified on 22.03.1790 in a treaty between Austria and the Countess. Thus Maria Rebekka remained the reigning lord of Lustenau. According to this, Lustenau remained officially independent but should remain in close contact with Austria.
Lustenau among the ruling counts of Waldburg-Zeil-Lustenau-Hohenems fell to Bavaria only after the end of the Holy Roman Empire on 01.09.1806. In 1811 and 1813 Bavaria had to surrender the sovereign rights to Waldburg. On 06.07.1814 Austria set up a provisional administration in Lustenau. Bavaria and Waldburg-Zeil were protesting. As Count Clemens and his wife had no surviving children he adopted in 1813 his nephew, Count Maximilian Clemens of Waldburg zu Zeil and Trauchburg. who succeeded him in 1817. In the face of financial burdens, the consequent loss of sovereignty by Count Maximilian, 1830 the lustral independence was finally transferred to Austria.
