The Princely House of Waldburg zu Zeil and
Trauchburg

In 15895 the three sons of Truchseß Jaocb of Waldburgf divided their posession. Truchsess Frobenius got Zeil and  is ancestor  of the House Waldburg-Zeil. His son Truchseßß Jpohann Jakob was obtained on 07.09.1628, the Title of a Count of the Empire. After the death of Count Johann Jakob in 1674 this line split agiain in Waldburg-Zeil-Zeil and Waldburg-Zeil-Wurzach.

Waldburg-Zeil-Zeil

 In 1674 Paris Jakob, the older son of Count Johann Jakob I. got Zeil and he was the ancestor of the line Zeil-Zeil. In 1779 the inherited the extinct County Waldburg-Trauchburg and changed their name to Waldburg zu Zeil and Trauchburg.

 Waldburg zu Zeil and Trauchburg

 In 1779 Count Franz Anton of Waldburg-Zeil-Zeil inherited the County Waldburg-Trauchburg after this line had become extinct in the male line. He then cha nged his name to Waldburg zu Zeil and Trauchburg. His son Maximlian was in was raised to a Fürst of the Empire (Reichsfürsenstand). But they where already mediated in 1806. The territory largely came to Württemberg and to a lesser extent from Bavaria. The Fürsten  of Waldburg-Zeil-Trauchburg each held a mandate in the First Chamber of the Württemberg States and in the Chamber of the Reichsrats of the Bavarian Landtag in the 19th century. They are among the most stately houses of the second section of the Genealogical Handbook of the nobility. Fürst Maximilian l and his grandson Fürst Constantin  were especially politically active, and the conflict with the unloved Wurttemberg countryside was particularly violent.
Today, the family is active in the fields of agriculture and forestry as well as through the entrepreneurial activities of Fürst Georg in the media sector (Schwäbischer Verlag GmbH & Co. KG with the Schwäbische Zeitung, participations in Allgäuer Zeitungsverlag and the Memminger Zeitung) And in the health care (Waldburg-Zeil Kliniken).

Waldburg-Zeil-Wurzach

In 1674 Sebastian ‘Wunibald, the younger son of Count Johann Jakob I. got Wurzach and he became the ancestor of the line Zeil-Wurzach.  In 1803 Count Eberhard  was raised to a Fürst of the Empire (Reichsfürstenstand), however already 1806 they where mediated Waldburg-Zeil-Wurzach belonged to the most stately houses of the Second Division of the Genealogical Handbook of the nobility, with seat and voice in the First Chamber of the Wuerttembergische Landstaats and in the Chamber of the Reichsräte of the Bavarian Landtag. With the death of Fürst Eberhard II. in 1903 the line became extinct in the male line. The castle in Bad Wurzach and the New Castle in Kißlegg where inherited by the line Waldburg zu Zeil and Trauchburg.
